âI would like to go back to work,â Bessie told her when she came in. âBut Father and the other men have said no, so I canât defy them.â
âThaâs a good lass,â said Jennet. âI think thy fatherâs mistaken in this. I donât think yon mill owners will back down.â
âGeorge says itâs different in America.â
âGeorge?â she repeated. âThatâs a bit forward, our Bessie. I think tha should be referring to him as Mr Anderton and showing a bit of respect!â
âHe asked me to call him George.â
âDid he indeed?â She needed to have a word with him, thought Jennet. Things were going to run out of control if she didnât convince him to end this friendship with her daughter.
âHeâs been very kind to me,â said Bessie.
âWell, donât set too much store by it,â said Jennet. âHeâll be off home soon.â
âIâm not so sure,â said Bessie. She sat down at the table and watched Jennet as she ironed shirts.
âWhat makes tha say that?â Jennet was wary and kept her eyes firmly fixed on her work. She hadnât damaged a single item since the awful incident when sheâd burned Mrs Pickeringâs blouse when Peggy was ill, and she didnât want something like that to happen ever again.
âI think thereâs something he wants to ask me.â
âWhat makes tha say that?â
âWell, he doesnât bother with our Peggy. Itâs only ever me.â She paused and Jennet glanced at her. âMam,â she said, reaching out a hand to stop Jennet working. âIâm worried about what he wants.â
Jennet put the iron down on the hearth and turned to face her daughter. How long could she keep this secret, she wondered. How long would it be before she was forced to confess the whole sorry story to her daughter? She cursed George Anderton for turning up again. There would have been no problem if heâd just stayed in America.
âIâve heard about men â¦â Bessie was fiddling with the edge of the tablecloth. She looked uncomfortable but Jennet gave her time to have her say. âIâve heard that some older men like younger lasses,â she said. âAnd heâs a widower. I think he might be looking to get wed again because he keeps telling me about America and how nice it is there. Iâm worried he might be planning on proposing to me,â she confessed.
âNo!â Jennet couldnât help herself. She heard the horror in her voice and wished she hadnât said it like that. âNo,â she repeated, trying to sound reassuring this time. âHeâs not going to ask thee to marry him. Tha need have no worries about that.â
âHow can you be so certain?â asked Bessie. âIf that isnât what he wants, then what?â
âHow dost tha know he wants owt? Heâs just being nice.â
âNo, itâs more than that,â said Bessie. âSometimes I catch him looking at me in an odd sort of way, and it makes me wonder what heâs thinking.â She looked up at Jennet. âIs there something you havenât told me?â she asked.
âLike what?â asked Jennet, folding the shirts ready to take back to Richmond Terrace.
